Distribution or Supply Chain Management involves the acquisition, inventorying, and use or shipment of parts, products or material. Closely related to and tightly integrated with the accounting functions, the distribution system is composed of purchasing, inventory control, sales order management and invoicing. In some environments, linking to shipping manifest systems or the use of EDI may be desirable.


As with accounting, companies have differing needs relating to their supply chain management; the needs of manufacturers are significantly different from those of distributors; the needs of service companies may be nonexistent.
